Over 10,000 attend first Stirling bull sale

THE first ever Perth Bull Sales at the new Stirling Agricultural Centre attracted more than 10,000 people.
Visitors who attended over the week travelled from all over the UK including Northern Ireland, as well as Australia, Sweden, Germany, Denmark and Austria.
The sales – a calendar highlight for the farming world – were held in Perth itself until now. However, United Auctions amalgamated its Stirling and Perth businesses at the new auction mart at Hill O’Drip, which was opened in July by Scotland’s First Minister Alex Salmond.
More than 800 pedigree cattle from Scotland, England and Wales – including 40 bulls from Northern Ireland – came to UA’s new headquarters for the October sales.
The highest bid on the opening day was 15,000 guineas (£15,750) for an Aberdeen Angus bull called Blelack Krackerjack Lad owned by Neil Massie and his son Graeme of Blelack, Dinnet, Aboyne.
The top price of 26,000 guineas (the equivalent to £27,300) was reached at the last day of the sales for the senior Charolais champion bull Balmyle Dickler from Bill Bruce of Balmyle, Meigle.
Customers and visitors attending the sales in the new venue were said to have made good use of the list of accommodation in the local Stirling area that is available on the UA website.
The autumn bull sales were sponsored by CKD Galbraith. The winter sales will be split over two weeks in February next year, from Monday February 1 until Monday February 15 at the centre.
United Auctions chairman David Leggat said: “The inaugural Bull Sales at the new Stirling centre have been a tremendous success.
“We’ve seen some great quality bulls and females reaching top prices on last year and the response to the new market’s facilities and its location has been very positive.
“We hosted more than 10,000 visitors from all over the UK and Northern Ireland as well as from Sweden, Australia, Denmark, Germany and Austria.
“And we were particularly delighted to welcome Stirling MSP Bruce Crawford, Stirling Provost Fergus Wood and Stirling councillors to these very special sales.
“We’re looking forward with great excitement to the winter bull sales, which are bigger and split over two weeks in February.”
Provost Wood said: “I was delighted to see how well attended and supported the Bull Sales were. The new market really seems to have caught on and I’m saying that as a farmer who has gone to the Bull Sales for many years.
“It was interesting how many buyers there were from outwith Scotland and the market seemed to be happy with the prices. There was also a very nice atmosphere. This is a big event which takes a lot of effort and resources to organise so full marks to United Auctions.”
